Individuals With Disabilities

As a person with a disability, what can I expect when I contact my regional DBTAC?

The centers offer several ways to assist people with disabilities and their family members as they seek to understand disability laws. The centers provide information on an individual’s rights and responsibilities under the ADA, the Rehabilitation Act, the Family Medical Leave Act, the Air Carriers Act, Workforce Investment Act and state human rights laws. Some examples of services are highlighted below, but don’t hesitate to call your regional center if your question falls outside these examples.

Information and Technical Assistance

Typical questions include:

  • Employment rights.
  • When to, or not to, disclose a hidden disability.
  • Access to public places or educational settings.
  • Access in education.
  • Housing and transportation.
  • Service animals.

The DBTACs can provide:

  • Support via toll-free telephone number or e-mail.
  • Additional information via mail, Internet or fax.
  • Referrals to documents, organizations or advocate groups.
  • Assistance in both English and Spanish.

Training

If you are a member of an organization and would like to conduct a training event, the centers can provide:

  • Customized training for your group.
  • Online, self-paced training programs.
  • Participation in a national, live distance learning series.

Publications

  • A planning guide for accessible temporary events.
  • The ADA Quiz Book.
  • Emergency sign language posters.
  • Accessible computing posters.

Symposium

An annual symposium (open in new window) is held in Kansas City, Mo., with targeted tracks for legal updates and improving comprehension of the ADA.
