In response to the many questions and requests for assistance following the devastating 2005 hurricane season, the ADA Technical Assistance Centers, or DBTACs, and the U.S. Access Board have joined together to form the Rebuilding Accessible Communities initiative.
Events causing widespread destruction create not only structural but emotional loss. By rebuilding communities in a manner more usable and welcoming to all, the community can become more cohesive and ultimately stronger. RAC was conceived as an opportunity for community groups, advocates and the building industry to collectively reconstruct communities in a way to be accessible to all.
This site is a first step to answer questions about physical restructuring, beginning with the FAQ document and resources list. Reproduction and distribution of these documents is encouraged. The site will continue to offer new resources, best practices and advisory information as they develop.
Organizations and groups requesting training, speakers or technical assistance are encouraged to contact their regional center or the U.S. Access Board.
The DBTACs are funded through grants from the National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research.
In the wake of Hurricane Katrina, many facilities were damaged or destroyed. Extensive construction and rehabilitation of buildings and facilities are expected over the next several years. The Department of Justice entered into settlement agreements with Harrison County, Miss. and New Orleans, La., that will provide guidance on the department’s expectations for rebuilding in the spirit of federal and local government cooperation. For more information, review the settlements online at www.ada.gov/civicac.htm or contact your DBTAC: ADA Center .
