Introduction
In response to the many questions and requests for assistance following the devastating 2005 hurricane season, the ADA Technical Assistance Centers* and the US Access Board are working together on Rebuilding Accessible Communities.
Rebuilding Accessible Communities (RAC) is conceived as an opportunity for community groups, advocates and the building industry to collectively reconstruct communities in a way to be accessible to all.
Events causing widespread destruction create not only structural but emotional loss. By rebuilding communities in a manner more usable and welcoming to all, the community can become more cohesive and ultimately stronger.
This site is a first step to answer questions about physical restructuring and will be further developed as new resources, best practices and advisory information are obtained.
The FAQ document and resources list on this site have been developed as a starting point. The reproduction and distribution of these documents is encouraged.
Organizations and groups requesting training, speakers or technical assistance are encouraged to contact their local Center at www.adata.org or the US Access Board at www.access-board.gov.
* The ADA Technical Assistance Centers, also known as Disability and Business Technical Assistance Centers (DBTACs) are funded under grants from the National Institute for Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR).
