About AccessIT

The National Center on Accessible Information Technology in Education (AccessIT) at the University of Washington serves to increase access to electronic and information technology for students and employees with disabilities by leading a nation-wide effort to incorporate accessibility into policies and practices in the nation's classrooms, computer labs, libraries, offices, and everywhere else where information technology is used in education. It is funded by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) of the U.S. Department of Education and is located at the University of Washington in Seattle.

AccessIT and Centers work together to create local and regional areas of expertise in accessible information technology.

Four major areas of collaboration:

  1. Materials development, including complete training materials; brochures and articles technical and detailed information on a variety of topics; case studies; examples of technology plans; procurement policies that illustrate promising practices; checklists; and step-by-step guides
  2. Training, both in-person and distance learning, including interactive training modules on the web, training videotapes, and hard copy materials
  3. Dissemination through a variety of means, including the World Wide Web, email, listservs, hard copy, and distribution at events, meetings, site visits, and conferences
  4. Technical assistance, through in-person communication during site visits, meetings, events, and through online, email, and telephone communication.
